How SMSF investing in India works

Watch a short video, then read the summary. Five common questions, answered simply.

Can my SMSF invest in Indian mutual funds?

Yes. An SMSF can generally invest in foreign managed funds, including Indian mutual funds, provided the investment is allowed by the fund’s trust deed, is consistent with its investment strategy and supports the fund’s retirement purpose.

Before investing, the trustees should confirm the rules, update the strategy where needed and record the decision in the fund’s records.

  • Check that the trust deed permits international managed funds.
  • Update the investment strategy to cover the proposed allocation.
  • Consider diversification, currency, liquidity and risk.
  • Record the decision with a signed trustee minute.

In short

If your deed allows it, your strategy supports it and the trustees document the decision, your SMSF can generally invest.
